Burton

About Burton
On Christmas morning in 1965, Sherman Poppen walked outside his home in Muskegon, Michigan, looked at a snow covered hill, and saw a wave. This birthed the “Snurfer”, Poppen’s invention to surf on snow. In the mid-60’s, Jake Burton was one of the thousands of kids to start surfing on snow with Sherman Poppen’s Snurfer. Jake saw the potential in surfing on snow, and moved to Vermont to start shaping snowboards. In 1977, Jake launched the first snowboard factory, making and riding his first boards. In 1982, after the growing popularity of snowboarding, ski hills opened their lifts to snowboarders. Today, Burton is the most well known snowboarding brand across the world. Burton is focused on supporting and expanding the very industry they started from. They started Chill, a non-profit foundation that works to improve the self-esteem, confidence and resilience of at-risk youth by teaching them how to snowboard. They continue to positively influence the world of snowboarding to this day.
